Charleroi's air quality faces significant challenges from its position at the heart of the Belgian-French Sambre-Meuse industrial valley, with the legacy steel and chemical industries combined with vehicle traffic on the E42 and surrounding motorway network generating elevated PM2.5 and SO₂. The Sambre valley's topographic enclosure between the Ardennes plateaux and the flat Brabant plain creates concentration of industrial and traffic emissions under frequent calm anticyclonic conditions, making Charleroi one of Belgium's more persistently polluted industrial cities.
