Gəncə's air quality reflects the Azerbaijan Kura River valley's partial enclosure between the Lesser Caucasus and the Karabakh Mountains, with vehicle traffic on surrounding roads and the manufacturing, chemical, and agricultural corridor contributing local sources. The valley's topographic enclosure creates concentration under inversions, while the Caucasian highland backdrop provides cleaner southerly airflows on most days and Ganja generally maintains moderate Azerbaijani provincial city readings throughout most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Gəncə?
Pollution in Gəncə typically rises when traffic on the surrounding roads, petrochemical and refining operations, as well as textile and manufacturing operations combine, especially once temperature inversions set in over the valley. The bowl-like terrain here limits how quickly pollutants can escape. This is most pronounced in winter, when inversions are more frequent.
Are air quality levels in Gəncə based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
