Linz's air quality faces Austria's most persistent industrial challenge, with the voestalpine steelworks on the Danube generating significant PM2.5, SO₂, and heavy metals alongside vehicle traffic on the A1 motorway and the Linz urban road network. The Danube valley's topographic enclosure between the Böhmerwald to the north and the Alpine foothills to the south creates concentration of industrial and vehicle emissions under winter temperature inversions, making Linz consistently Austria's most industrially impacted urban air quality environment.

Occasional Föhn events can dramatically improve conditions even in winter, while summer sees generally good dispersion aside from the odd ozone spike. Spring and autumn are usually comfortably mild.

Are air quality levels in Linz based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
