Wollongong's air quality faces significant challenges from the Port Kembla steelworks and coal export terminal, with BlueScope Steel's coastal industrial complex generating elevated PM2.5, SO₂, and heavy metals alongside heavy vehicle traffic on the Princes Highway. The Illawarra escarpment immediately inland creates severe topographic enclosure, trapping industrial and vehicle emissions against the narrow coastal strip between the sea and the 400-metre sandstone cliffs on calm days.
