Set in the Derwent Valley, New Norfolk shares the basin geography that makes several Tasmanian towns prone to trapping winter smoke, with wood heater use rising sharply through the colder months of June to August and settling in the valley on calm nights. For much of the rest of the year, the town benefits from Tasmania's clean-air reputation, driven by the Roaring Forties westerlies sweeping in off the Southern Ocean. Bushfire smoke is a modest seasonal risk between January and March. Outside winter inversions, air quality here is generally very good, reflecting the island's overall low pollution levels.
