Canberra's air quality is generally excellent, benefiting from its elevated Australian Capital Territory plateau position at 580 metres and the surrounding Brindabella Ranges providing clean southwesterly airflows. The primary concern is bushfire smoke from the ACT and NSW alpine forests during summer and autumn, which can severely elevate PM2.5 across the capital. Winter wood heater smoke adds localised PM2.5 in residential suburbs during cold overnight periods.
